Release Plans: Volunteer at Pinole Senior Center

Release Plan

I recently shared my husband Choon Yong’s story, who has registration number 95009-507, with Ms. Kristina Santoyo from the Pinole Senior Center and Mr. Rod Chiu from Meals on Wheels. I hoped they might consider Choon for volunteer work upon his release from Atwater Prison Camp.

On July 29, 2023, I attended the arts and crafts fair organized by the Pinole Senior Center. Once everyone had set up, Ms. Kristina began greeting each participant personally. When she reached my table, I seized the moment to discuss Choon’s situation. I explained that he’s currently at Atwater for a white-collar crime and emphasized his non-violent nature. I conveyed his eagerness to give back to the Pinole community through volunteer service after his release. Kristina responded empathetically, acknowledging that everyone makes mistakes and deserves a second chance. She suggested that Choon visit the office for an interview upon his release, emphasizing their constant need for volunteers. She also advised me to connect with Mr. Rod Chiu from Meals on Wheels, who was at the fair recruiting volunteers.

Following her advice, I approached Mr. Chiu and recounted my conversation with Ms. Santoyo. He listened attentively and expressed understanding and compassion about Choon’s situation. Mr. Chiu asked Choon to complete some forms upon his return, mentioning a background check as a mere formality. Intriguingly, he also asked if I’d be interested in the Meals on Wheels program, noting my current living situation and disability. He handed me application forms, and I promised to consider his offer.

Gratefully, I returned to my table. That day, I was thrilled to have met two kind individuals and established potential opportunities for Choon’s future.

I recommended that Choon take the following steps to prepare for his volunteer role at the Pinole Senior Center:

  • Journal: Continue to journal regularly to show how writing helps to strengthen his mind.
  • Book Reports: Continue writing reports to show what he’s learning from the books he reads.
  • Helping: Continue helping the people around him.
