Rather than continue my boring stories about what I do and eat each day, I thought I’d try to tell you about some of the interesting things that go on here in camp. There are some funny goings on here…
I’m going to start with a short story about contraband and karma…
Right after I got here, there was some drama surrounding someone I’d become friends with. Apparently, some guys thought he snitched on them for contraband and they were planning on getting revenge by planting a cellphone in his cube. Luckily someone found out and stood up for him and thwarted the setup. The story started in the education center/library where my friend works. He came out of class and saw the other inmates and the c/o talking and looking at one of the vent openings in the ceiling. Apparently, the head of education noticed things were getting moved after hours (the building is not locked overnight.) and decided to figure out what was going on. She spread dust on the top of the cabinets beneath the vent and sure enough, the next day the dust was gone…someone was climbing into the ceiling through the vent. The C/O’s came and poked their head up in there and saw nothing. Later, my friend tried to warn the guys that he thought might be doing something to get their stuff out, but apparently, they took it as a threat. The C/O’s, after finding nothing by peaking up there, came back with a ladder and climbed into the ceiling…and found a treasure trove of contraband…phones, booze, food and drugs/cigarettes. Literally thousands of dollars worth of contraband in secondary money. No one was busted though as they didn’t know whose it was.
The karma part come in later the next week. One thing about camp is things are very relaxed. The C/O’s are pretty lazy and instead of having to do crazy things like using drones or other things to get stuff in, the inmates just bring it through the front door. No checks or anything. One day, for whatever reason, the assistant warden decides to visit. As she is talking to the C/O’s 3 of the guys who were part of the contraband group were coming in from working in the warehouse. The C/O’s, because she was there, jumped up to do their search. Of course, the very 1st people they were checking in front of her had contraband. They had stolen cheese and pistachios from the warehouse! After the inmates were taken away, she started questioning how it was that there had been no busts in months and then the 1st people walking in had something. Duh!!! Cheese and pistachios…must be a hot commodity.
