In the Garden
My plan is to transfer to camp in 10 months. The warden put a one year PROGRAMS variable on me to fulfill the agenda of the Peer Success Team start up and the various facets of the program. I have 10 months to train the two young protege in the garden on how to greet each season- we are documenting the days so they will know what to do next year.
I have until to December to submit 5 various possibilities for the community garden. I finally figured out the logistics and now it’s time to draft up the proposals.
I feel so incredibly grateful, I have been submitting proposals for a herb and vegetable garden to be added here for 7 years.
Here in So. Alabama, there is this like second spring that comes along; once the heat breaks, the flowers get a new sense of life and vigor- they seize the opportunity to shine one more time before the freeze. This makes the daily job easy, we cut away the wild flowers that are simply played out, pull the brown strands from the day lily. The roses are in one last dance, having survived the heat of the summer; colors of melon so rich that they seem divine….and they are.
In front of Education there is a long stretch of garden where we park my little janitor cart and we have workshops.
Each morning, the girls know there will be something on my clipboard that we are going to get into. I am planning and rehearsing for the DOMESTIC VIOLENCE EVENT, so this is the material for the week.
In order to have these organic, sporadic workshops, you must have one key ingredient: Safe Space.
A safe space can be described as, but is not limited to:
-open mindedness
-trust
-caring
-confiding
-friendliness
-objectivity
-humility
-honesty
-communication
-respect
-loyalty
-security
-empathy
-mindfulness
-non judgmental
-faithfulness
-support
-caring
-sincerity
-comfort
-authenticity
-commitment
-kindness
-love
-encouragement
-hospitality
– approachable
-ethics
-stability
-accountability
-value
If these are the ways of your life, you can grow a workshop anywhere.
One of my favorite things to say is this, ” positive people talk about smart and interesting things and negative people talk about other people.”
I challenge you, wherever you are, to find something interesting to talk about all day- whether it be about something you heard on NPR or something you read, bring it up in conversation. If you find yourself around people who are talking about other people, change the subject or walk away.
Create safe spaces and look for opportunities to WORKSHOP cool, healthy topics of wellness; things that spin in the 8 dimensions of wellness.
Namaste.
