PEER SUCCESS TEAM – Legal Foundation for Structure
First Step Act:
18 USC par. 3635 (3) (2019)
(3) EBRR:
(c) may include-
(vi) ” Mentoring “
(5) Productive Activity- either a group or individual activity that is designed to allow AIC’s determined as having a low or minimum recidivism level, to remain productive and thereby maintain a low or minimum recidivism level and may include the delivery of the programs described in par. 1 to other AIC’s.
18 USC par. 3635 (5) ( 2019) grants the BOP authority to utilize local AIC talent to ” deliver ” the programs, earmarked for earned time credits within the sole discretion of the BOP.
Such will require AIC mentors to be screened and trained by staff in accordance with all BOP policies to form a Peer Success Team.
Supplemental training is recommended:
Based on the concept that, “Re-entry begins the very first day “, we chose the FSA program:
PREPARING SUCCESS ( PSAP, May 2024 )
By combining this with the 8 Dimensions of Wellness, we are able to set healthy goals for the community, with the ultimate goal of mentoring participants who are healthy, goal oriented, re-entry ready, back to the community.
Ninety mentors have qualified to attend the training seminar, hosted by the recreation department and facilitated not only by Social Worker Daniels, but in efforts to satisfy the requirements of the FSA, we will have other staff members there to train us the the creative ways that we intend to mentor the AIC’s in FCI Aliceville on how to live according to the 8 Dimensions of Wellness, goal setting, and becoming re-entry ready. In the training seminar, we will create a space where the mentors ( PEER SUCCESS MEMBERS ) will be able to realize their talents in order that they may go back to the communities and be effective mentors.
The think tank or the PEER SUCCESS TEAM LEADERS form our circle of 15. One director for each unit, the person who gathers the information bi-monthly, taking it back to the community in which they live and rallying their group of mentors- on to the next agenda towards change: the next set of SMART goals.
