Title: Artificial Intelligence
Welcome to The New Age of Discovery
Author: National Geographic
Why I choose to read this Book:
Artificial Intelligence is the technical revolution that will revolutionize how mankind will utilize it to fuel discovery and apply it to fuel further discovery. I hope to keep abreast of this latest development and learn from it.
What I learned from this Book:
The artificial Intelligence (AI) revolution isn’t coming, it’s already here – and making radical advances in our understanding of everything from Brain surgery to space exploration, archaeological mysteries, animal communication, and natural disasters.
AI Welcome to the New Age of Discovery:
Breakthrough in computation are suddenly empowering researchers to confront new questions and solve age old mysteries. At the center of the revolution swirls a litany of complex technologies: Machine Learning, Advance Algorithms, Natural Language Processing, and Natural Network. These tools, harnessed by the pioneers will help reshape our understanding of our planet – and our sense of what we can use AI to achieve.
How AI is Giving Surgeons New Superpowers:
AI is regularly used to help medical team diagnose tumors and more efficiently. AI is already being used in research capacity to help with real time decisions making. Molecular sequencing can be broadened to help identify diseases and conditions. Using DNA to instantly recognize rare or difficult-to-diagnose ailments could radically reshape the landscape of medicine. Scientists are already theorizing that AI could be paired with surgical robots to automate complex procedures. Imagine, in 10 – 15 years, a neurosurgeon could wear a pair of AI-enabled glasses that would be able to pinpoint and identify cancers in real-time. Terminator vision for tumor hunting.
Quandaries of the AI Age:
Most generative AI models have been trained on large swaths of data from across the internet, but nobody has checked the accuracy of those data, nor does the AI understand what is or isn’t a trustworthy source. We need to take time to examine not only AI’s processes but also the flawed human processes underlying the datasets it was trained on, we can make AI better and hopefully, reflect on our social and cultural biases and work to undo them. We need to figure out how to put guardrails around Chatbots, augmenting them with tools that check citations and facts.
AI is Supercharging The Hunt For Another Earth:
Modern astronomy was reaching a bottleneck. Telescope in space and on earth collect so much information that human can’t decipher it quickly, or even at all and future observatories were being planned that would only flood the field with more observations. Starting in 2025, the Vera C Rubin Observatory in Chile is expected to image the whole sky in 3 days and it is expected to capture one million Supernovae, as well as tens of thousands of asteroids and other celestial objects. Some estimate the number of planets in the Milky Way in the hundred or billions with only some small but unknown proportion of them being earthlike. Exominers are using AI to solve this ultimate needle-in-a-haystack problem. It can also hunt for condition on planets that can host life. Also algorithms are being develop to help create brand new images which appears blurry in the past. This new tools will be used to look for planets that will sustain life.
The AI Evolution:
AI systems are changing as quickly as the hardware they run on. Seventy years ago, rudimentary version could navigate mazes. Today they perform astronomical calculations. The Android Opera in Tokyo, a robot is improvising lyrics with ChatGPT, gives a glimpse of how AI might redefine our artistic limits, offering new styles of creativity and entertainment.
AI is Revealing Lost Secrets of The Ancient World:
Armed with new tools, scholars are suddenly able to read papyrus scrolls long deemed to fragile to open. The breakthrough could rewrite history.
Can We Trust What We See?
Th future of photography has changed, the shift from the early date of digital photo editing to AI imagery in which digital services are use to instantly generate realistic visuals. As AI imagery become more common, we need to find new ways to confirm that we can believe what we see.
AI is Decoding The Hidden Lives of Animals:
What are animals saying? Researchers are finally building the tools to understand. Project CETI – an effort to understand ” What whales are saying”, to translate non human communications. They enlisted AI rudimentary programs to help organize the audible clues in new ways for more inspiration. The application can be deployed to other animals, birds, insects and other species, as well as other human languages. If artificial intelligence can help us access other parts of the natural world we don’t yet understand, who knows what universes it could open someday.
How do we Confront The Environmental Impact?
AI has a water problem and an energy problem. Heat is generated by the energy required to power the AI tools that people are using daily. Cooling down the data center requires an enormous amount of water. Water is evaporated to cool down a data center is gone. The energy used by the data centers are increasing between 20-30 percent annually.
How AI Will Help Predict Natural Disaster?
Researchers are mapping the underworld are getting a richer picture of how seismic moves and where danger lurks. Beneath California lies a labyrinth of faults. The best way to mitigate these future disasters is to draw maps of the underworld, charting every fault and monitoring its behavior. Seismometers on the surface chronicle sorts of vibrations including earthquake. Machine learning together with algorithm upon the seismic record. Previous date were analyzed by the algorithm and it was able to detect many tiny quakes which prior searches were unable to see. As these machine learning program work with increasing precision, we will learn more about the planet’s subsurface. This may be used to boost the speed and accuracy of earthquake early-warning system to save lives and property.
Stop AI from Compounding the Problems of The Past?
When AI hoovers up all the data that humans have created, it becomes a mirror reflecting the stereotypes, racism, and inequities that continue to shape the world. These biases are often due to a lack of diversity among people hired to build AI systems and tools. To democratize AI by incorporating diversity and divert from Eurocentric thoughts, moving AI development from big tech to local levels.
How will this book contribute to my success upon release:
The knowledge gain from AI will improve my analytical and critical think skills and broadens my knowledge about new developments in science and technology. This information will help me improve my efficiency by incorporating AI in my future projects. The knowledge gained will be shared with communities when I volunteer my teaching, tutoring and mentoring services.
