Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Raheem,
Let me share my story with you, dear friend:
Introduction/Opening Snapshot
I am Wisam Sharieff, born in 1981 in Stamford, Connecticut. Once a respected Quran teacher and founder of Quran Revolution, now writing to you from behind prison walls. My story is one of rise, fall, and the ongoing journey of redemption through Allah’s mercy.
Background/Early Life
I was raised in a devout Muslim household in Connecticut, blessed with parents who emphasized both Islamic values and education. My early years were shaped by the dual streams of American culture and Islamic tradition. Despite battling Crohn’s disease and spending time in a wheelchair, these challenges drew me closer to the Quran.
Inciting Incident/Turning Point
After becoming a successful Quranic teacher and founding two companies, including Quran Revolution, my life took an unexpected turn. My addiction began controlling my choices, leading to actions that would eventually bring me here, to this cell.
Struggles and Challenges
Beyond my physical battles with Crohn’s disease, I’ve faced the internal struggle with addiction. Now, I cope with the loss of everything I built – my freedom, my ability to teach directly, contact with my children, and the trust of my community. Even here, I face daily challenges like limited access to Islamic resources and halal food.
Commitment to Change/Growth
In this cell, I’ve found a new purpose: to transform my pain into guidance for others. My medical background as a radiology technician has become an unexpected tool for serving others, as I help fellow inmates with their medical needs while maintaining professional ethics.
Process of Transformation
Through daily reflection, prayer, and writing, I’m learning to rebuild myself. Each day brings opportunities to practice mercy and compassion, even in the most challenging circumstances. I’m developing a deeper understanding of addiction and recovery, blending Islamic principles with modern healing approaches.
Milestones and Achievements
Prior achievements included founding Quran Revolution and leading two companies. Now, my milestones are measured differently – in moments of helping others, maintaining faith despite restrictions, and finding ways to serve even within limitations.
Giving Back/Impact on Others
I continue to teach and guide, though in different ways. Through writing, sharing medical
knowledge, and offering spiritual support to fellow inmates, I strive to be a source of hope and healing for others struggling with addiction.
Current Life and Vision
In my current role as the Imam of the jail, I have the honor of leading the five daily prayers and delivering the Jummah sermons each week. This responsibility has deepened my connection to Allah and allowed me to serve my fellow men spiritually, providing them with the guidance and support they seek in this challenging environment.
Beyond spiritual guidance, I contribute to the personal growth of others by assisting them in educational pursuits. I help teach and guide those working towards earning their GEDs, recognizing the power of education in transforming lives and opening doors to new opportunities.
Additionally, I engage in advocacy work by assisting inmates in writing letters to their judges. By helping them articulate their stories and express their growth and remorse, I aim to support their journeys toward redemption and rehabilitation.
Through these efforts, I continue to find purpose and meaning, striving to be a beacon of hope and a source of positive change within the confines of these walls.
Your brother in faith,
Wisam
