Journal Entry: Frederica Lefthand-09/30/2024-Changing the System

Journal Entry

Hello Again,

Another thing I would like to see change within the prison system is the educational opportunities available to individuals who deserve a second chance in life. I see a lot of inmates who have so much potential and its just wasted. Yes, arts and crafts are great to pass the time and send things home to your families or recreation classes to keep fit or whatever but colleges and universities should consider truly making a difference in people’s lives and reach out to them or answer them back at least in working out an individualized plan of study. I worked within the university system my entire career and know it is possible so its sad and frustrating to hear the education departments excuses. I know I would be able help in recruiting students with the potential I see in them and making contact with Tribal Colleges, HBCU’s and mainstream College’s & Universities. I have taught seminars, managed numerous grants & helped run Little Big Horn College as the Dean of Academics. I recruited, retained and help graduate Native American Nursing Students at Montana State University within the College of Nursing.
If I wasn’t serving this sentence I know I would be working with students in some capacity.

I would also like to see the BOP assist the inmates in wanting to change instead of allowng them to do what they did in the free world behind bars still making more money then your average Joe/Jane just trying to do their jobs not causing problems but still getting shots for going up for another tray hindering their eligibility to leave for a camp. You know the drill…. they turn a blind eye or even help make things happen for some of the imates.

Thank you for your time in reading my response.

Sincerely,

Frederica
