This story shows someone who “almost” had a great idea to get contraband in. One thing about being in a camp is there is a lot of freedom. Certain jobs are able to leave the camp to go do their job – maintenance, agriculture, Unicorp furniture guys, drivers etc. They have a special vest they wear so the C/O’s know they can be outside the gates.
One guy had the brilliant idea to “borrow” a vest and go out to meet someone for contraband. He got outside pretty easily, but instead of just getting his stuff and coming back, he decided to stay and smoke in the car with his pals. This would probably not be an issue in most cases, but that’s where his good idea turned to an “almost” good idea. He in his infinite wisdom, picked the absolute worst day to do this. In the Month and a half I’ve been here, the only time the lobby at the camp is busy is on weekends with visitation. So, he did at least go during the week but he failed to check the schedule. This day had not only my group’s orientation (I know a month after I got here, we have orientation – go figure) but also a mock interview session scheduled. So we had a large crowd in the lobby. Many people who aren’t even involved with the prison, but volunteered to come do the interviews were here. As we’re going through orientation, we hear someone calling a C/O over. Contraband guy had to go past the head of education who noticed he reeked of smoke and called a guard. Sure enough, he had cartons of cigarettes and cell phones on him. Needless to say, he won’t be back at the camp any time soon. You were this close!
