Lesson 23- Emotional Intelligence
– I understand the concept of emotional intelligence as understanding your own emotions and the emotions of others.
– Emotional intelligence is important for personal development, especially during imprisonment, because while being in prison you only have time to think and build. By understanding your emotional intelligence and being self aware, you can identify your own emotions and your triggers. This allows you to be in charge of your own emotions and not allow the circumstances that are surrounding you to become who you are.
– A time when emotional intelligence helped me navigate a challenging relationship or conflict while imprisoned was when my partner was having a difficult time adjusting to all the stressors that occurred with me being gone. Instead of becoming angry about the email that was sent, i was able to look at it and understand the feelings that were coming from home. I kept my anger and sadness down and responded to the email in regards o to how they were feeling. I apologized for what I could control and then tried to find ways to solve the problems at home from here. We cannot change what happened in the past but we can look at building or changing what happens in the future.
– Developing emotional intelligence can help you prepare for building healthy relationships and resolving conflict upon release by being ware of your emotions, having empathy for others, being ware of the emotions and needs of others will help you have better responses and relationships with others. You will not be worked up in situations and by controlling your emotions you are better able to hep others with their emotions.
