If I was going to advise someone on what I thought might be a more or help to effectively advocate for reforming systems so that people would have the opportunities to earn freedom would first be to acknowledge the staff & team working w/ the inmates meaning are the profficient in knowing what they can do for the inmates. I would also make sure that the prisons are making the inmates aware & making all possible opportunities available. I know from experience that those few things have been a hinder in inmates getting the ‘favor’ to earn anything much less freedom. I know that a lot of us are participating to the best of our abilities in everything (which isn’t much at most facilities) possible to earn these liberties but are short changed due to our staff not being knowledgeable or experienced in processing any of it. I would also encourage more programs to be ready & available in facilities & maybe even more involvement on a personal level as to know what exactly is being made possible for the inmates. I think if we inmates knew more about how to express our ‘voices’ in a positive way we could be more effecient on the inside to help move things in a better & more positive way. A lot of people (inmates) sit stagnant b/c they dont know or fear letting their voices be heard for various reasons. Education in all things is always going to help pave a path. When I first read this question thats what came to mind. Thank you for the chance to speak my thoughts on this.
