Journal Entry

Saturday, July 20th

Little fog so of course we know what that means, especially on a Saturday for some reason! Lockdown, 7-9, then normal lockdown 9:30-11. Fog was gone by 8, which would have allowed 8 o’clock Yard, so clearly not enough staff again.

Got my revised BP-9 written, so hopefully typed tomorrow and submitted Monday/Tuesday. I need to follow thru this administrative process to support my legal strategies for getting treatment.

Last Tuesday when the doctor noticed my lung issues, he prescribed an asthma inhaler, will be interesting to see how that impacts my autoimmune symptoms while they seek medical records.

Great workout 12-3 on a beautiful afternoon!

Sunday, July 21

Library 7-9, normal lockdown/lunch and church 12:30-2. Nice to be making progress on all my tying of appeal notes legal call agenda and other items!

Nice call with the grandkids. Of course only one is speaking yet:) Something about listening to all of them on the speaker at dinner time, almost makes me feel like I’m there!

My daughter and her boyfriend are getting an MBA in home ownership, after moving into their rental last month. Funny how the entire weekend(and 4 more) can be consumed by fixing up the inside and backyard:)

Monday, July 22

No library 7:30 due to GED testing, and for some reason our 8 am census count didn’t end at 8:30, but went till 10 am. But I was highly productive standing up writing in my cell on my little storage locker.

After lunch my typist finished my 7 pages of appeal theme notes plus the revised BP-9. Will review both tonight and finish Tuesday. Derek and I helped an inmate last couple days with getting home confinement through a 2241 Habeus Corpus filing, as he should have been to a half way house a year ago. BOP always hides behind bed availability which isn’t even a legal reason to do so, its mandatory to release someone when eligible. Numerous courts have ruled this way, but for some reason various locations keep doing things the old way.

Good workout tonight, but guards kept us till 8 pm to stay outside without telling us, so it gets frustrating. You think you need to be in line at 7:30, and instead of continuing your workout, you end up standing in line, get cold and stiff for 30 minutes all because of no communication. Its not their fault as the inside control makes the decision without communicating. These late moves are a real problem here for some reason the inmates say. I got to believe its intentional though for some reason. Better start bringing a sweatshirt for the next time this happens which I’m sure it will! Middle of July or not!

Feels good to turn in the revised BP 9 on my medical records explaining that each of the “rejected” reasons from the prior BP-9 was correct per BOP Policy. But I understand this is just about making a record for the file, as I’ ve been repeatedly warned by staff to expect another rejection. I now see why all the “legal firm” emails newsletters that inmates receive explain the only true way to make progress is through the courts. Separately, I have 11 envelopes(5 pages each) going out containing appeal notes, agenda for next legal call, to family and counsel. Sometimes I really do miss private email:)

Reading simultaneously a couple really good books: The Go- Giver by Bob Berg and John David Mann, and Shantaram, by Gregory David Roberts. I’ll be doing a book review of Shantaram, a 900 page autobiography that’s really well done. The Go- Giver is a short “success/self improvement” type book which I will recite from in out BT book, and has 5 really sensible principles:

* Provide more value than you receive

* Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them

* Your Influence is determined by how abundantly you place other peoples interests first

* The most valuable gift you have is to offer yourself

* The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving

These feel very aligned to how I used to spend my time on the outside, serving others. Guess it should apply inside here at Lompoc as well!

Today is my every 6 month review with my case manager. Purpose is to review projected release date, First Step Act credits, when is target move to camp etc. Fortunately I now understand all this stuff well enough so I do my own calculations. Good news is I have zero security points(risk of problem while incarcerated) and the lowest risk of recidivism. Need both of these for camp. I just need to get the remainder of my sentence length under ten years between time served and credits, and then I can transfer, should be June next year. He is showing October next year, so I have to review his work. More on that some day:) Otherwise things seem fine according to him, and I should keep up the good work:)

With the 11 pieces sent, my legal work is done for awhile and I’m just waiting for the legal team to get me a draft of the appeal. My focus will now return to book writing and typing. I think I will go back to 2/day workouts, one at 8-9 after a couple hours writing. Then 5-6, skipping dinner, just making my own tuna sandwich or PB & J. Track/exercise on the morning, weights in the evening.

Things are heating up with my friend Derek, the BOP hates American with Disabilities Act with their old buildings. I sure hope they just move him to camp, even just to home confinement, will be interesting to see.

Thursday, July 25

It’s amazing how when the BOP wants to, they keep the moves going, fog line or not. Part of me wishes they always had construction going and had to get us outside:)

Feels good to finally be mailing off so much to the attorneys and family, 30 pages each. My time is now more flexible in terms of needing to go to the library less, so I can catchup on my 4 book reports plus several blog topics. And in 3 weeks, I can finally type 12 weeks of journals, and the ABT book and book reports. Probably take me a month or more since I can only do 15 minutes at a time, wait for 15-30 minutes depending on others, and then type again. Of course the waiting line is always short….

Tonight was the fist night I started typing the handwritten ABT book pages into a PC. Feels good! Have 50 or so handwritten pages that will be a project. My mornings will be spent from 6:30-8 or if I’m rolling till 9. Otherwise outside 8-9 for a workout. Will be a nice switch up to the routine. As the experts say, one needs a routine in prison to make time go by faster, but it needs to be switched up from time to time as well. I totally get it. On the outside, that’s pretty much what used to happen. The switch up was often times travel related, but somehow that doesn’t happen in here:)

Friday, July 26

Great progress writing for the ABT book this morning. Plus Derek stumbled on a book at the library written by Washington DC Public Defenders office and other local agencies and volunteers. It walks through all kinds of re entry issues and how to deal with them. We’re more national focused, but certainly will be a useful bibliography.

For some reason library was closed all afternoon plus the Yard, so all we could do was watch the Olympics Grand Opening ceremony live or be in our cell till 5. Was nice to skip dinner and get outside at 5 and workout after all that!

Praying for Liberty and Freedom and to see my Family and Friends soon! BJ
