Embracing Change and Building Resilience

TL;DR

Change is inevitable, and resilience is essential for navigating it successfully. In prison, we face unique challenges that require us to adapt and grow continuously. By embracing change and building resilience, we can prepare ourselves for a successful reentry into society. Focus on developing new skills, maintaining a positive mindset, and setting clear goals to overcome obstacles and achieve your future aspirations.

Subject: Embracing Change and Building Resilience

Change is a constant in life, and it often comes with challenges that can test our limits. I had many setbacks while I was in prison. I remember a time that administrators blocked me from using a typewriter for anything other than writing to the court. I was working toward an undergraduate degree at the time, and I didn’t understand why the administrators would block me from advancing my education.

Then I realized that their job wasn’t about making my life easier. I had to find ways to succeed, or prepare for success, regardless of what the system did to me. I still had more than 20 years to serve when that happened. It helped me realize that there would always be changes, and some of them I would not understand. Yet I could never use the decisions that others made as a reason to stop pursuing my own goals and objectives.

We will define our future by the ways that we respond to unexpected and unwelcome changes. In prison, change can be particularly daunting, but it also presents opportunities for growth and development.

We can learn to embrace change and build resilience to prepare for a successful return to society.

Each change requires us to adapt, learn, and grow. Whether a shift in prison policies, a change in our personal circumstances, or the evolving nature of the world outside, we have to find ways to stay resilient and focus on goals.

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity and keep moving forward. It is a crucial skill for anyone facing the challenges of reentry. Here are some strategies to help build resilience:

1. Develop a Growth Mindset: Believe that you can improve and learn from every experience. View challenges as opportunities to grow rather than obstacles.

2. Set Clear Goals: Define what you want to achieve and create a roadmap to get there. Break down your goals into manageable steps and celebrate your progress along the way.

3. Stay Positive: Maintain a positive attitude, even in the face of setbacks. Focus on what you can control and take proactive steps to improve your situation.

4. Build a Support Network: Surround yourself with people who encourage and support your growth. This network can include family, friends, mentors, and organizations dedicated to helping formerly incarcerated individuals.

5. Practice Personal Development: Take care of your physical and mental health. Exercise regularly and find healthy ways to manage stress.

Embracing Change

Embracing change means being open to new experiences and willing to adapt. Here are some ways to embrace change effectively:

1. Stay Informed: Keep up with changes in policies, laws, and opportunities that may affect your reentry. By reading more, you can know more about what’s going on in the world. I know people want to hear news about prison reform, but that is a slow-moving ship. I work on it every day, but I understand that it will take a lot of personal investment to bring about the changes I want to see–access to work-release programs and more home confinement.

2. Be Flexible: Be prepared to adjust your plans as needed. Flexibility will help you navigate unexpected changes and stay on course toward your goals.

3. Learn New Skills: Take advantage of educational and vocational programs available to you. Developing new skills will increase your confidence and open up more opportunities upon release.

4. Reflect and Adapt: Regularly reflect on your experiences and adjust your strategies as needed. Reflection helps you learn from your experiences and make better choices in the future.

Taking Action Today

You shape your future by the actions you take today. Embrace change and build resilience by focusing on your personal development and preparing for the challenges ahead. Here are some steps you can take right now:

1. Identify Areas for Improvement: Reflect on your current skills and identify areas where you can grow. Set specific goals for improvement and create a plan to achieve them.

2. Seek Support: Reach out to family, friends, and mentors who can provide guidance and encouragement. Join support groups or programs that focus on personal development and reentry preparation.

3. Stay Committed: Keep pushing forward, even when faced with setbacks. Remember that resilience is built through perseverance and determination.

4. Become an ambassador of the Prison Professors mission. Recruit more people to work toward preparing for success. For our advocacy to succeed, we must work together to help thousands and thousands of people change.

Be the change you want to see!
