Journal Entry: Michael Santos-Execute

Journal Entry

Life often places us in situations where adversity feels overwhelming. It’s easy to believe that circumstances dictate our destiny, but my experience has taught me a powerful lesson—every person holds the power within to overcome challenges. The key lies in how we plan, how we set priorities, and how we execute our plans.

I’ve been fortunate to learn from leaders and thinkers who shared their wisdom, helping me see that the future holds far more opportunities than the past. These lessons have shown me how we can position ourselves to seize those opportunities. Whether you’re facing life-altering challenges or striving to achieve a personal goal, a solid plan paired with determined execution is your ultimate tool for transformation.

Through this blog, I hope to inspire and empower you to build a strategy that leads to positive change.

Lessons from Leaders and Thinkers

Throughout my life, I’ve drawn inspiration from individuals who faced adversity with courage and resilience. Their stories provide actionable steps that all of us can follow.

One profound influence is the book Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl. Frankl, a Holocaust survivor, speaks about finding purpose even in the most harrowing circumstances. His lessons on resilience taught me that while we can’t control external events, we can choose how we respond.

Books like Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich further reinforced the importance of planning. Hill emphasizes that clarity of vision, paired with actionable steps, transforms abstract dreams into achievable goals. These thinkers have fundamentally shaped my belief that building a life of success hinges on the plans we create and execute.

If Viktor Frankl’s insights provided a lens for inner resilience, authors like Brian Tracy—whose Eat That Frog! simplifies the art of prioritization—gave me practical strategies to manage tasks in structured and achievable ways. Such guidance remains instrumental as I work toward personal and professional goals.

Every individual has the capacity to learn and grow. The question is, how do we channel that learning into progress? It starts with building a meaningful plan and staying committed to executing it.

Why Plans Matter

Why is planning the first step in overcoming challenges?

Without a plan, even the greatest aspirations remain unfulfilled potentials. A plan provides structure to goals, breaking them into manageable steps. Whether working toward rebuilding your life after a setback or striving for educational goals, a plan transforms ambiguity into actionable tasks.

Imagine building a house without a blueprint. The result? Chaos. The same principle applies to life. By creating a clear plan, you’re giving yourself permission to succeed. You’re mapping a route that takes you from where you are to where you want to be.

Planning, however, is not about creating perfection. It’s about preparing for progress. It’s giving yourself the tools to face obstacles with confidence, knowing you have a strategy in place to adapt and move forward.

For those who are incarcerated or re-entering society, for instance, the power of planning can be profound. Breaking goals into categories like education, personal development, and skill-building can provide daily purpose. It sets the foundation for a stronger future.

The Role of Prioritization

Once your plan is set, the next step is learning to prioritize. All tasks aren’t created equal. Brian Tracy’s Eat That Frog! introduces the concept of tackling your most important or challenging task first—a strategy that has been pivotal in my life, especially given my background of having been confined for decades.

Start by categorizing your responsibilities into what’s urgent, what’s important, and what can wait. This simple act of organizing creates clarity and reduces overwhelm, enabling you to build momentum on the tasks that truly matter.

Here’s how to implement prioritization into your day-to-day life:

  1. Write It All Down – Create a to-do list for everything you need to accomplish.
  2. Label Tasks as A, B, or C – Assign priority levels to each task, with “A” being the most critical and “C” being least important.
  3. Start with the Hardest Task – Take on your most mentally challenging or time-intensive task while your energy is highest—typically early in the day.

For those of us navigating the ongoing ripple effects of adversity, whether it’s rebuilding careers, pursuing advanced degrees, or reconnecting with family, prioritization helps conserve our mental and emotional resources for where they matter most.

Remember that progress is built one step at a time, and each step you take is a testament to your commitment to growth.

The Magic of Execution

Plans only work if we execute them, and execution is often the part where fear or self-doubt creeps in. But taking action—imperfect and small as it may feel—is where transformation begins.

I’ve learned through experience that execution is a skill we build through repetition. Start small, stay consistent, and hold yourself accountable. The compound effect of small actions executed over time can lead to life-changing results.

One tool that has helped me, and many others, is effective journaling. Logging my progress daily has kept me aligned with my priorities and motivated as I saw milestones being reached, no matter how small.

I’ve also turned to strategies like habit stacking, as described in James Clear’s Atomic Habits. By anchoring new actions to existing habits, I’ve been able to create momentum. For example, I stacked a daily reading goal with my morning coffee—a pairing that made execution feel natural rather than burdensome.

For those incarcerated or in transitional stages of life, this might look like pairing a focus on physical fitness with a daily practice of mindfulness—a dual habit that fosters both mental and physical well-being.

Executing plans isn’t just about the end result. It’s about who you become in the process. It’s about building confidence and resilience, showing yourself that transformation is always within your power.

A Glimpse into the Future

The greatest opportunities always lie ahead. Leaders who inspired me often emphasized that the past is a reference, not a residence. To truly seize life’s possibilities, we must remain focused on building the future through planning, prioritization, and execution.

Remember, every step you take—no matter how small—is a victory. The challenges you face today are teaching you the skills needed for tomorrow’s opportunities. Take the lessons from inspiring thinkers, commit to your vision, and act with purpose.

If you’re ready to take the next step in building a meaningful life, we’re here to support you. Start by defining a clear vision for your success. Put pen to paper, map out your plan, and trust the process of execution. With every action you take, you draw closer to the opportunities and fulfillment that await in the future.

Now is the time to act. The power to transform your life already rests within you.

Self-Directed Question:

  • What specific goal do you want to achieve, and what clear plan can you create today to start executing it step by step?
