Rationalize Thinking
There are 5 rules of rational thinking and these rules indicate if self-talk is rational or not. They will help challenge cognitive distortions and promote effective decision making.
Rule #1 Are your thoughts based on objective reality and facts?
Regardless weather you like them or not facts are just facts, and they different from your beliefs. This rule is important because it helps to understand objective reality before forming an opinion.
Rule #2 Are your thoughts helping protect your life and health?
If your beliefs will lead you to putting yourself in harms way, slow down and judge carefully weather you beliefs are worth acting upon. At times you may think your right or your opinion is worth fighting for but remember right doesn’t always win.
Rule #3 Are your thoughts helping achieve your short and long term goals?
The choices you make today determine the likelihood of achieving your goals. Some people unconsciously never consider if their beliefs are helping them achieve their goals. Keeping in focus your plan and goals can help influence effective decision making.
Rule #4 Are your thoughts helping you stay out of conflict with others?
If able it’s best to prevent unnecessary and significant conflict. Disagreements with others are sometimes unavoidable but doesn’t necessarily mean it’s conflict.
Rule #5 Are your thoughts leading you to feel the way you want to feel?
By taking your time to consider if your beliefs are leading you to feel the way you want to feel you can make decisions that are healthy and productive.
