8 Rule-Breaking or Criminal thinking Errors for change

Mollification- Individuals demonstrate mollification they, minimize, justify, or make excuses of their rule-breaking behavior.

Entitlement- Individuals demonstrate entitlement when they display having a sense of privileges, being special, being different than others, and being an exception to the rules,ETC.

Cut-off – A cut-off is a response to frustration, and an excuse to give up. Individuals demonstrate the use of cut-off when they suppress feelings in order to engage in to rule violating behavior and turn off their conscience.

Sentimentality- Individuals demonstrate sentimentality when they focus only on the good things they’ve done or accomplished, without realizing destruction they’ve caused as a result of their criminal activity. They describe such things as charity work, and good things they’ve done for others, etc. as a way to deny the negativity of criminal behaviors.

Super-Optimism- Individuals demonstrate super-optimism when they believe they can engage in negative behaviors with little risk of receiving negative consequences or they look at the one mistake they made instead of the many poor choices.

Cognitive Indolence- Individuals demonstrate cognitive indolence when they look for shortcuts or the easy way out of a situation. This behavior may be displayed by community members when they choose to speak in broad or general terms as a means of avoiding the accountability that comes with specifying.

Discontinuity- Individuals display discontinuity when they are inconsistent, lack follow-through, or decide to “fake it until you make it.”

Power-Orientation- Individuals demonstrate power-orientation when they try to bully or intimidate someone else through posture, tone of voice, and word choice.
