Journal Entry: Latonya Richardson-Brown-08/02/2024-FSA Calculator/Alderson

Journal Entry

Everyday the women of Alderson struggle against the unfair treatment, injustice, and gross disrespect Alderson employees continue to have for the law.

The First Step Act (FSA) Calculator (FSACalculator.com) recently circulated throughout the campus last week, leaving many women stunned by their pre-release dates, which showed months past a potential release date calculated from the website. This sparked a glimpse of hope for many hoping to be released soon.

A large percentage of the women at Alderson are past their pre-release dates and should have left Alderson into pre-release custody months ago.

The agenda of Alderson employees is not, “TO LET THE PEOPLE GO”.

The lack of respect for the law continues to plague the campus. During an Adult in Custody’s (AIC) 2nd Team Meeting held on July 31, 2024, proved nothing will CHANGE.

The AIC was asked to choose between Halfway house or Home Confinement placement despite the law allowing the AIC to benefit from both. She was given no release date and told if she wanted to discuss a date, she could see the Unit Manager at a later time to possibly, “WORK SOMETHING OUT”.

The Unit Manager made it clear during that meeting, the amount of time given for Halfway house placement and Home Confinement placement is to “HIS DISCRETION”. He stated, he is ONLY recommending 10% of a sentence for placement.

The Unit Manager will not honor the maximum amount of time the FSA calculator is providing for Halfway house placement and Home Confinement. He said, “I COULDN’T ask for that amount of time. I would be “the laughing stock” at Halfway houses, if I let everybody go at once”. Protecting how others view him, is far more important than following the law.

Case Managers are also choosing which AIC’s FSA credits will be front loaded (projected). When asked, if the AIC (in the Team Meeting) FSA credits will be front loaded (projected), the Unit Manager answer was, “NO”. Time is running out for her and she is facing, “STREET RELEASE”.

On 8/1/2024, the same Unit Manager stated to an AIC during his open house, “I don’t have to front load (project) credits and we are only taking care of the ones (AIC’s) with short sentences that need to be out now.”

A Case Manager commented on 8/1/2024 and said, “It would be better to just stay here (Alderson) to do Halfway house time because Halfway houses are in bad neighborhoods with drug dealers on the corner. If you give into your temptations or if you ever was an addict you would be straight back here, but hell it may not be any better than FPC Alderson with all the drugs going around here”. Another Case Manager stated the calculator is only a “TOOL” and she WILL NOT use it.

New Commits were called into the Case Manager office this week to sign for Halfway house dates meanwhile, AIC’s who have waited months past their prerelease dates continue to sit and pray for a miracle toward release.

I created a manuscript months ago that included language to help AIC’s submit their administrative remedies which has increased the number of submissions tremendously, however its not enough. The process of filing Administrative remedies, Compassionate Releases, and 2241 Motions are taking months for responses. Time that most don’t have.

Administrative remedies were denied by Regional. Some Counselors refused to give AIC’s administrative remedy forms, some counselors refused to make copies when the copier was broken, mail has been delayed causing administrative remedies to be “UNTIMELY” which prevented them from reaching the Central Office. Nothing we do is giving us ANY relief.

This is costing taxpayers thousands of dollars daily, all to protect the EGO’s of the employees at Alderson Federal Prison.
