Journal Entry

Date: October 21, 2023

As we embark on a new week, I’m filled with anticipation for what lies ahead. The crispness in the air signals the arrival of cooler weather, which will undoubtedly enhance our work conditions. Starting our days at 6:30 AM this week feels like a small victory, allowing us to capitalize on the refreshing temperatures that make our tasks more manageable and efficient.

Monday marks the beginning of our projects with a diverse lineup. The team is split into two groups: one tackling the longline paint and crosswalks in Saddlebrooke, while the other focuses on the Pascua Yaqui Speed Hump project. I’m excited to see how Sean, Anthony, and Justin will bring precision to the longline paint; I can already picture them, paint sprayers in hand, moving like a well-oiled machine. Meanwhile, Matt, Dillion, and Oso will apply their expertise to the speed hump tape and RPM installations. I can’t help but feel a sense of pride watching our crew come together—collaboration is key, and I’m confident they’ll work seamlessly together.

On Tuesday, we head to Dove Mountain for the YS4 blackout project. This is another opportunity to see Sean, Anthony, and Justin in action, alongside Oso, as they transform the area with their skills. I can already envision the contrast of the fresh lines against the backdrop of the mountain, creating a visual that will stand out. Matt and Dillion will be busy re-striping at Jack in the Box, ensuring that our work meets the highest standards. It’s gratifying to be part of a team that values excellence, no matter the task.

Wednesday brings a bit of a shake-up, as Anthony takes a well-deserved day off. The rest of the crew will still be on site for the Eloy RXR crossings. Armed with our tools, we’ll tackle obliteration, pre-formed thermoplastic applications, and Minimac Thermo installations. It’s a day that promises to challenge us and enhance our teamwork. I’m eager to see our combined efforts take shape, with Sean, Matt, Justin, Dillion, and Oso bringing their best to the job.

Thursday turned out to be a bit of a wild card. Our thermoplastic truck suffered a blowout on the way to Eloy, which left me and Lucas stuck in the area for most of the day and evening. Watching GoodYear struggle with a 30-ton jack that bent under the weight was a surreal experience; it was almost comical how heavy the truck was! Unfortunately, we had to call off the job and send everyone home. It was disheartening to see time and money slip away like that, especially when we had rooms booked for the crew. My respect goes out to Lucas, our boss. He goes above and beyond to ensure we’re taken care of, even when equipment issues hit hard and he’s losing money.

Friday was all about logistics. I picked up multiple 30-ton jacks and returned to Eloy to bring our Peterbilt truck back to Tucson. I definitely learned how time-consuming it can be to manage such a large vehicle—any little issue can lead to significant delays. From here on out, I plan to be much more attentive during my walk-around inspections; these trucks aren’t easily fixed in the field, and I want to avoid any future mishaps.

As we wrap up this week, I’m reminded of the importance of teamwork and the passion each member brings to the table. We’ve faced challenges, but I believe they’ve only strengthened our resolve. Let’s make this week not only productive but also memorable!
