Journal Entry

Over the last few weeks I have been blessed to know a new gentleman named Matthew.
Matthew was mistakenly placed here when he belongs in a medical facility. He is mentally disabled, and has the mind of a small child.

I took to Matthew right a way and have been taking him around the compound and making sure he is safe. This has included introducing him to everyone I know so that they can understand him better. I have been surprised by the compassion shown by the majority. People give him candy, talk with him, and are generally understanding. I think Matthew being sent here has helped us all reach deep down and pull out something in each of us that would have remained buried had it not been for him.

It reinforces my belief that most people are good people, and I think now, many of the guys who would have been scared to show it before, do so now on a daily basis all because of Matthew.

Matthew cried to me one day and asked me “Why God made him this way?” As much as it broke my heart, it also opened my eyes. I was able to explain to Matthew that he has a special purpose in life that nobody else could handle. He brings out the good in people, even in a bad pace like this. That is something many of us have tried to do and failed. He accomplished it in a mere few weeks.

It is true when they say, “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” I have learned a lot from Matthew and I am thankful for the time I get to spend with Matthew each day, but look forward to him going home.
