Today is yesterdays tomorrow. Changes and opportunities are appearing so fast and so often It could cause me to drift.
A drifter, according to author Napoleon Hill is someone who moves from idea to idea, starts on a path and then after minor failures or distractions loses focus and moves on. They lack a burning desire to achieve a goal and change that goal often. A non drifter never loses sight or belief in what they desire and achieving an end result. They never give up and failure is not an option. A few classic examples of non drifters include Thomas Edison who tried and failed over 10,000 times before perfecting the incandescent light bulb. He was laughed at and mocked by his family and peers but he did not waver. Henry Ford poured millions of dollars into developing the V8 engine before he found success. His engineers came back to him after a year and said it was impossible and he replied “go back and bring me what I requested”. They returned after a second year with no results. He immediately funded them for a third year without hesitation and again replied “go back and bring me what I requested”. This time he added “All things are possible for those who never give up.” The V8 went on to become the industry standard engine across all makes and models including Fords competitors and made Ford a billionaire in todays dollars. Modern day examples include Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Elon Musk all who saw something that wasn’t, never lost hope and worked backwards from the end result until making what they dreamed a reality. What all these men have in common is, despite being mocked and ridiculed by their peers, they never wavered in their belief and had a burning, all consuming desire for success. They also surrounded themselves with experts and like minded people. Ford was famous for this and would often say ” If I had all the answers and knew everything, I would not have needed to hire you.” Education is important however both Ford and Edison never graduated high school and Edison had only 3 years of formal schooling. I’m super encouraged that all these men achieved goals on multiple fronts and disciplines, some simultaneously. Burning desire and unwavering belief lead to a knowledge that leads to success. Right now the most frustrating thing being here is I can’t put my plans into action until I leave. To some degree I’ve enjoyed being unplugged but Internet access would serve me very well right now as I will be leaving here in 23 days and chopping at the bit. I could write you about what my plans and goals are, but that is secondary to the laser focused burning desire I have to make them my reality. These are not pie in the sky ideas but solid, concrete plans with a desired outcome. Without question my best and most prosperous years are ahead. The impact I will have will result in real world change in my own life and the lives of others is without question. In many ways I have been gleaned and preparing for this moment my entire life. It is that realization that tells me not only was I given what will be a 9 month sabbatical and reset, but that it was necessary to open up the doors of my mind and for me to become the best version of myself.
