Journal Entry

FOMO is the acronym for Fear of Missing Out. I read the Wall St. Journal everyday and the world has changed in real and measurable ways since I became a resident of this camp on April 5, 2024. There is disruption in what we have accepted as normal. AI is changing the way we do business while Bitcoin just hit the $100k mark for the first time. RFK Jr. is calling out Big Pharma and the food companies that poison us with their additives and ultra processing that contribute to chronic disease. Elon is helping shrink the size of Government by calling it out on waste and bureaucracy. People are fed up and delivered a strong mandate with this past election. How about for profit private prisons? Why does the USA have more incarcerated citizens (by far) than any other country on the planet? Are Americans as a whole a more dishonest people? One in thirty adult males between 18 and 30 years old are in jails. One out of every 100 citizens will at some point in their life be incarcerated. Are these criminals or customers? Without passing judgement on who should or should not be here, there seems to be a majority of those that could be “paying their debt to society” in a more productive manner that serves both the public and the individual. It costs $70,000 per person per year to house and feed first time, non violent offenders that may or may not have done everything the Government piled on to bring them to their knees and plead guilty. Justice in this country has lost its way. Prosecutors game the system to build a resume with over zealous prosecution’s and charge stacking to secure guilty pleas. This leads to a lucrative private practice that will make them future multi millionaires. I could (will) write a book on this subject as well as the practice of attorneys who take clients money while acting more like head hunters rather than defense attorneys. I have come to know several people who spent in excess of $1,000,000 on attorney fees just to take a plea deal which is insane. It is exploitation and a crime worse than the “criminals” that hire them. As the country goes thru seismic change lets hope the powers that be take a long hard look at the Federal Prison system. There is waste and corruption at every level and it starts with for profit private prisons. Simply put, a for profit business needs customers or it will go out of business. With a seemly endless supply of “customers” and law makers who own stock in private prison’s there needs to be some serious checks and balances put in place. Lets hope the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) does not overlook one of the largest bureaucracy’s in a wasteful oversized Government, the Federal Prison System. Lets hope and pray that the FOMO and the buzz around camp is not based in reality and that change is coming.
