This is my first journal entry from inside the Atwood Prison Camp. Today is my third day in the prison. I finally got approval for this email to be added, so I am glad I can finally write this.
The last two days have been a whirlwind. The Atwood Camp is located next to FMC Lexington, which is housed by male prisoners in MAX. My processing was at the FMC Lexington prison, and then they sent a van to bring 6 of us to the Camp. I tried my best to prepare for the prison, but some of the things I read even online about this Camp aren’t entirely accurate. First, you are permitted to wear a plain wedding band, but no other jewelry. Also, all of your clothes will be confiscated and you can either have them throw them away or they will mail them back to your home. I read you could bring a bible, but that isn’t accurate. They will confiscate that too. Also, I brought all my newly refilled prescriptions, but those were thrown out. I didn’t get all of my medications yet, and met with the doctor today finally to get my medications approved. I hope to get them this evening. Write out all of your medications for the prison, and they should let you bring that list.
I only have 5 minutes left on this session, so I will try to type fast. The prison Camp is a lot different than a minimum security or MAX prison apparently. Atwood is designed like a dormitory. There are three levels, 200 women and 2, 4 or 6 person rooms here. The women here are kind and supportive. This was refreshing to see. I have already done the surveys and signed up for three classes. My couselor siad I won’t meet with her for 28 days to see what jobs/classes I can take, as she has to see how much money goes into my commissary.
You will need about $300 to start here to get adequate toiletries and warm clothing. It is FREEZING here. Also order books on Amazon ahead of time to learn as much as you can and plan for life after prison. I will write more tomorrow when I have more time.
