Q. What changes in America’s prison system would you like to implement?
A. The main change in America’s prison system that I would like to see is a retroactive law that addresses the disparity in the purity of methamphetamine. On June 13, 2024, there was a release from the sentencing commission stating they are looking at data collected over the last 25 years on the sentencing of methamphetamine related cases and the largely disparate fact that they are sentencing 2 different ranges of a system that is completely out of reality with today’s purity levels. I am a person who was sentenced to 15 years and in my PSI it states that a person of my criminal history and with the same culpability in my case would receive a sentence of 10 years. I am in no way saying that my involvement in my case was excusable or that I didn’t deserve to come to prison. In fact I am thankful that I was sentenced to prison time because I am convinced that it took this sentence for me to finally conquer my addiction. I even say that having lost my best friend, my father, while serving this sentence. Although, I am certain that I do not need to be in prison for 15 or even 10 years to learn my lesson. I have been incarcerated for 5 years as of August of this year and I have achieved a great deal in the 5 years I have been in prison. I am committed to continuing to be successful after my release. I have a great support system and I have met some great people and life-long mentors as well. I look forward to being given a chance to prove that I will never take my freedom for granted ever again. Thank you for reading.
