My own experience like anyone else’s is unique. every person has their own story to tell or their own perspective to describe. by sharing my own i wish to let those who have family or friends in prison know that its not as bad as they make it seem in the movies. yes, people get hurt and the corrections officers who are supposed to protect us inmates sometimes are worse than the inmates, but most times in my view when something bad happens to someone in here its because they brought it upon themselves. with so many different personalities and uncontrolled mental states going unaddressed by the psychologists misunderstanding between inmates happen all the time. we are under extreme stress from being held away from our family or loved ones who constantly tell us through mail or phone calls the hardships they themselves are facing and we have no way to help. and then there is the stigma some inmates are given because of their crimes or background or even their race that adds to the duress. with all these added up and no one really making the honest effort to reach out and help in anyway it is a hard struggle no matter how much time a person is given.
but i made it to the the last years of my sentence and i have hope that with all the laws being passed i might even see freedom earlier than i ever imagined. so i encourage others to stay out of trouble and drug free, to program even if it seems like a waste of time. i encourage others to not give in to the depressing atmosphere that is constantly weighing over us every day. if i can make it anyone can.
