This past week I’ve seen a few things happen that happen often in prison that can demoralize inmates into giving way to bad emotional output which causes the ill feelings to spread to others whether they are aware of it or not. I try to stay positive when these situations arise and put on an air of confidence in the face of adversity not only to keep myself from falling into the mire of self pity and self loathing but to inspire others to keep a good mentality. life is hard and prison can seem even harder because we are separated from our loved ones and the things we love to do that usually keep us in a good mood. but even if our bodies are bound to the prison environment that doesn’t mean our minds are locked away to suffer with us. if we can let our minds remain free then nothing can really bring us down. today we will receive three hot meals, wear clean clothes with access to fresh water and have a bed to rest on if we are weary. the rest is up to us how we choose to deal with life and I constantly tell people that prison is hard only if we let it be hard on us, that it is all in our mind’s eye to see things as depressing or as an opportunity to become better and stronger. so the conversations I have had with individuals this week hopefully sowed the seeds of positivity to keep them coming back to me for advice and see me in a good light because I never know when I might need their help in the future.
