What prompted me to choose this book?

I chose Atomic Habits because I wanted to better understand how small daily actions can create significant, long-term improvements in my life. I’ve often struggled with consistency whether it’s sticking to positive routines, breaking bad habits, or staying focused on goals. I had heard many people describe this book as practical and transformative, and I felt it could give me tools to build better habits now and prepare me for greater success upon release.

What did I learn from reading this book?

Atomic Habits taught me that meaningful change doesn’t come from big, dramatic actions but from small, consistent improvements what James Clear calls the 1 percent better approach. I learned about the habit loop cue, craving, response, reward, and how understanding this cycle can help me reshape my behaviors. Clear introduced the concept of identity-based habits that lasting change comes not just from focusing on goals but by focusing on who I want to become. Rather than saying I want to read more, I should aim to become a reader. This shift helps habits stick because they align with my sense of identity. I also gained practical strategies like habit stacking pairing a new habit with an existing one, environment design making good habits easier and bad habits harder, and the two-minute rule starting small to make a habit achievable. Most importantly, I learned that success is the product of daily systems, not just setting ambitious goals.

How will reading this book contribute to my success upon release?

This book has given me a roadmap for rebuilding my life through small, intentional actions. I know that my success after release won’t come from a single event but from the daily choices I make. Atomic Habits showed me how to design my environment and routines so that positive habits feel natural, and bad habits become harder to maintain. By applying these principles I’ll be able to build consistent routines that support my personal and professional goals, stay focused on becoming the kind of person I want to be disciplined, reliable, and resilient, and break down big goals like employment, education, or rebuilding relationships into small, manageable steps. Ultimately, Atomic Habits has given me confidence that I can create meaningful, lasting change no matter where I start.
