Adrienne Willis, a middle-aged woman, having reached a cross-roads in her life, agrees to look after her friend’s inn in Rodanthe, which is a small coastal town in North Carolina. She hopes to find solace and space to reflect on specifically the challenges her divorce and strained relationship with her daughter she is facing. She needs to reflect on all and find a new direction in life.
During her stay at the inn, the area is getting ready for a major storm and amidst this, a guest arrives, Dr. Paul Flanner. Paul is a surgeon who has come to Rodanthe to confront the tragic outcome of a surgery her performed, whereby the female patient died. He is also dealing with personal issues such as his divorce and strained relationship with his own son.
Adrienne and Paul find solace and understanding in each other’s company as the storm hits the town. They grow closer and the relationship blossoms while the house is shuttered up against the rages of the storm. The storm blows out all cobwebs and tragic memories and cleanses them, allowing for new beginnings between 2 mature adults.
Paul’s stay is short, but before he leaves, they make plans to start a new life together, believing that they have been granted a second chance in love.
Paul decides to visit his estranged son in Ecuador to reconcile and there Paul dies in a tragic accident.
The book ends with Adrienne reflecting on her brief, intense love affair with Paul, albeit very brief, but leaving a deep impact on her life and helping her with her inner growth.
Paul’s son visits her and hands her a stack of letters that she had written to Paul, all this time. Their love was pure, true and very mature.
