Author: Michael Robinson

I. Why did I choose to read Trucking Business Startup 2023?

Part of my release plan is to start my own owner/operator trucking business. Since I have obtained my CDL and started driving for Casey’s Transportation and then Glass City Transportation I have realized that I have a passion for driving big rigs. I loved being on the road and the skills I acquired from this showed me that this is what I want to do. So while I am incarcerated I have made it a goal to learn all I can about this field.

II. What did I learn from Trucking Business Startup 2023?

1. The commerce of the trucking industry covers 80% of America’s delivery system. The revenue stream caps out just under $800 billion dollars a year. Transportation of goods being delivered by Trucks is here to stay. Thanks to COVID the ecommerce has grown tremendously due to the need for contactless goods. There is no better time to start a company.

2. Step by step start up process. The book lays out how to start from the ground up and covers everything we need to know as for buying your first rig, trailers, and equipment needed to run a trucking company. It lays out what types of loads are available. Types of trucking businesses.

3. It shows how to make a business plan and explains why a business plan is necessary. I will be reading another book that is based solely on creating business plans.

4. It lays out what licenses and permits are needed. It also shows what taxes to be aware of and the best way to minimize your taxes.

5. Lists the pros and cons of buying a truck or lease a truck. If you buy a truck should you buy new or uses? It lays out all the advantages and disadvantages for buying new, buying used, or leasing.

6. After you get everything together you bought a truck you found your niche and purchased a trailer have all the permits needed now the book shows how to run the business.

7. Maintaining your equipment. Now that you are running your business its going to be time to maintain it. That means keeping all your equipment running and maintained. The next thing after that is cash flow.

8. Why trucking businesses fail? It list all the reasons why trucking companies fail. Bad Management, Finance troubles, charging inadequate rates for your services, failing to comply with state and federal rules and regulations, not seeking out professional help when needed, not satisfying customer expectations, not investing in technology.

III. How will Trucking Business Startup 2023 influence my prospects for future success?

This book was the perfect answer to most of the questions that I have about the trucking business. I was a great driver on the road. My employer praised the way I handled our customers, they way I would shop around for the lowest fuel prices on my route, my dedication to my job, etc. Having been part of his company I saw how I could do so many things different that would cut back costs, that would retain drivers after hiring them, and on top of that I have a few customers of my own that I have been able to acquire that would eliminate the use of load boards. That means not having to pay broker fees that usually charge 15 to 20 percent of the haul. That’s an extra 15 to 20 percent in earnings. But the biggest barrier to starting the business has been a lack of information. And starting with this book and many more that I will read will help me overcome that barrier by educating myself by reading books and subscribing to magazines that talk about the trucking industry. No one would want to invest a great deal of money into something unless that are well informed about the decisions they are making. This helps me educate myself and to also educate any potential investors.
