I was introduced to this author from my ex wife and good friend Rennie Steiner. I was interested in a Toltec self-help book because of my Yaqui heritage.
The goal is to take the fear-based agreements that make me suffer and reprogram my mind. To me, it feels a lot like CBT. In the sense that we are changing our agreements with ourselves which changes our thinking. Our thinking connects to our behavior and actions. This leads to an over-all better life. Better sense of self.
The first agreement is to be impeccable with my word. The word holds power. I have the option to criticize someone and hurt their spirit or I can uplift them. When I speak I tell the truth. I practice honesty and integrity and I’m careful with what I say.
The second agreement is don’t take anything personal. People do things because of what is happening in their own reality. It has nothing to do with me. If someone disrespects me I can’t take it personally. It has nothing to do with me. I let it go.
The third agreement is to never assume anything. I don’t insert myself in gossip. I take only facts into my awareness.
The fourth agreement is to always do your best. Without this agreement the other three are worthless. I’m not perfect and I can’t follow through with these agreements or anything 100% of the time. But I can always do my best. Always practice willingness and discipline. Always put 100% of my effort into everything I do.
This book has made a huge impact on my life. I practice these agreements daily. I have added this into my self-help arsenal on my way to becoming a spiritual warrior.
