“Can’t Hurt me” by David Goggins is an all inspiring life changing read. I personally chose to read this book get an insight of the mindset that accomplishes greatness, to learn about rewiring the brain and the way it is condition to think, especially under extreme circumstances. One must be comfortable with the discomfort that comes form growth, enjoying the struggle as part of the process. The lessons explained in the book will help me during and post-incarceration because I have gained a shift in perspective about approaching challenges.
What I’ve learned from reading this book:
Lesson 1: Identify the challenges
David Goggins explains the importance of identifying the challenges we face. Being aware of what you’re up against can give you a mental advantage. Preparation is power.
Lesson 2: Self-accountability
Self-accountability leads to self-discipline. David Goggins speaks about his accountability-mirror, where he gets face to face with himself and tells the ugly truth. The goal of the accountability-mirror is to face the undesirable reality and find the willingness to change it.
Lesson 3: Discomfort-Zone
David Goggins explains why the discomfort-zone is part of the process. The discomfort which births growth is often mistaken for pain but, the strongest minds persevere.
Lesson 4: Taking souls
The idea of “Taking the Soul” of the opposition is to metaphorically crush the life or to take the power of whatever challenge you’re facing. Understanding the power obstacles have in your life was given by you and the choice is yours to take it back.
Lesson 5: The Armored Mind
An armored mind is essential for achieving success pass the norm. The mind must be unbreakable, steadfast and always focused. But its important to focus your energy on the things you can change.
Lesson 6: The Cookie Jar
The Cookie Jar method explained in the book is to remember what your capable of. Being able to recall past victories can rebirth a similar state of mind and propel you back to greatness.
Lesson 7: The 40% rule
The purpose of the 40% rule is to gradually remove the mental governor and push past limits. The mental governor warns to the mind and body of exhaustion. But the mental governor activates at only 40% effort, leaving 60% of untapped energy . Grasping the idea of the 40% rule allows you to avoid the give up affect.
Lesson 8: Talent is not required
Remembering talent is not required embraces the attitudes of willingness and perseverance. Hard work will always surpass and outlast talent.
Lesson 9: Uncommon amongst Uncommon
Being “Uncommon amongst Uncommon” simply is being the very best of elite company. The very few who become uncommon amongst the uncommon have a very strong sense of character, being very humble and willing.
Lesson 10: Empowerment from failure
Failure can bring empowerment. Failure doesn’t equal loss but equals lesson. One only fails when they quit, lessons bring empowerment.
In conclusion “Can’t Hurt Me” by David Goggins influences my future success by giving me a different point of view on self. What I’m capable of, and how I plan to remain resilient moving forward. I encourage others to read this book because of the powerful lessons of understanding self and resilience. I’m sure the application of these principals will lead to a more fulfilling and purposeful life.
