A single mother returning to her home town after 11 years . Brook didn’t think she would ever come back , however after both of her parents died in a car accident she had inherit their house and she is returning to the home where she grew up and lived an amazing life until the day her parents learned she is pregnant and asked her to leave and never come back. She was only 17 years old. Brook is a survivor . 11 years ago her boyfriend tried to kill her after they made love for the first time. She made it out in time. Her friends didn’t . The night of the event was chaotic and dark. The storm made the electric go out . Her friend went hysterical and she didn’t know who she can trust . Brook didn’t see her attacker , but she could smell him and feel his weight on her . Tim her next door neighbor and her best friend was there that night as well. Tim claimed that he saw the attacker and that Shane was the one who did it . Tim said that Shane stubbed him and then went after Brook , he hit him with a bat to assist Brook . Shane was sent to spend his life in prison.
Upon her returning to town , Brook tried to find a job as a nurse practitioner , no one returned her call except one place , The high security prison . After the interview she was hired on the spot without background check and found herself working in the prison where the person that tried to kill her was serving a life sentence . Its was a different working environment than what she was used to . Brook didn’t know what to expect in place like that and the thing she feared the most happened. The man that tried to kill her was sitting in the examination room , hands and legs shackled . While she was taking care of his injuries she felt sympathy for him, to see him like that . They start to rebuilt their connection and she started to doubt her memory of the night of the event . Shane claimed he was innocent . Brook did not know what to believe.
At the same time Brook start dating Tim . Tim was Brook childhood next door friend , the one that was with her on the night of the assult .Tim was in love with her since they was kids , he never told her how he feel about her . Tim worked as the assistant principal at the school where her son Josh went to school . Brook and Tim began to date and were falling for each other . Tim started to establish an amazing bond with Josh who was eager for a father figure in his life. What Brook did not know is that Tim told her son something that later on would save her life. Tim tried to tell Brook how dangerous Shane was. While she dating Tim , Shane in a very manipulative way was able to make Brook believe that he was innocent and he made Brook believe that Tim was the murderer all this time. One night while Brook was spending a romantic night at Tim’s house , she went to the basement to grab a bottle of wine and discovered a woman’s body . Brook started to connect all the dots and was starting to understand that she was dating a murderer while an innocent man was sitting in prison for the last 11 years because her testimony during his trial. Tim was arrested and was awaiting his trial , while she helped Shane to get released from prison for a crime he did not commit.
Shane is a free man and Brook was waiting for him at the gate of the maximum security prison . Brook invites Shane to live in her guest room so he could start to establish a relationship with Josh , their son. Brook didn’t understand why Josh was keeping his distance and not getting close to Shane in the same way he did with Tim . One morning Shane asked her to take him back to his childhood house , to the same place where the attack took place . Shane explain Brook that he need to start clean and repair the house so he could have a place o live. Brook tried to avoid doing so but ended up going with him to her worse nightmare . After cleaning , Shane went for a hike in the woods with Josh . Brook start to feel uneasy and things started to come back to her. Now she know that Shane is the one that tried to killed her , he is a murderer and he is out there with her son . Her phone didn’t have reception , however she got a call from Shane telling her that now she will see how it feels . Running out the house to find help just to learned the ugly truth . Her babysitter was Shane Mom . Shane and his mom planned it all . Shane mom tried to kill her. Brook was able to shoot Shane’s mother and save herself . Josh came running from the woods toward Brook. Shane’s mom survived and after she learned that her son had died , she didn’t care no more and confessed it all. 12 years ago she had an affair with Brook’s father for a year . She thought he would leave his wife and his daughter for her and they would live a comfortable life . He didn’t . He stayed with his wife and daughter . She blamed Brook and that is way she planned with her son to kill Brook and made Tim as the main suspect . The plan failed and Brook survived. Brook learned why her parents wanted her out of town and far a way , they knew that Brook would be at danger if it was to be discovered that Brook’s son is also Shane’s son.
This was why they sent her away . Brook also learned that Shane’s mom was the one who killed her parents . All they wanted was to protect their daughter and grandson lives .Brook has a lot to rebuilt , mostly the relationship with Tim that in a way saved Brook and Josh lives. Tim was the one who told Josh before , that if he ever met a man name Shane Nelson he should know that he is a very dangerous man. This is why Josh knew he had to kill Shane to protect himself and his mom.
At the beginning of the year I set my self a few goals . one of my goals was to read 60 books this year , 75% of them in English .
On June 12 , I finished reading The Inmate . The Inmate was the # 34 book that I read this year and I have 26 more books to read to complete my goal .Freida McFadden wroth The Inmate.
I choose to read The Inmate for the following reasons ; I read some of McFadden books before and I liked them . This book title caught my interest due to my current status. I choose to read it as part of improving my English. English is my second language . I didn’t speak much English before my arrest . I went through my trial without being able to communicate without a translator. I know now how important communication is for success in any area of life. So I am reading to improve my skills . Even though this book is recreational , it’s has helped me in many areas.
The Inmate made an impression on me for the following reasons ; It’s plot kept twisting often and I didn’t know what was coming next , I saw how hard it is to know who to believe , as well as how thoughts control the way we feel . I was impressed at how well McFadden expressed the way that people see and treat inmates and how fragile the line is between being innocent and spending your life in prison . How someone can be a second away from spending their life in prison for a crime they didn’t commit.
Reading the inmate will contribute to my success upon release for the following reasons ; I am increasing my vocabulary , I am learning to spell better in English and I am learning to be more open minded and objective to others . I can see where my thinking errors have played their part when I am reading and see what I need to strengthen.
