Book Report: Overcomer by David Jeremiah
Everyday is a battle for the believer. We have an enemy who is lurking in the shadows to kill, steal, and destroy. Thankfully we serve a God who through His Sin defeated the enemy, and we and the enemy need to be reminded of this daily and ask the enemy to flee.
One of the biggest overcomers in the Bible is the classic story of David and Goliath. But David faced his battle with conviction, courage and confidence, which gives important insight into how we are to face our “giants”. In addition, we need to refuse to be discouraged by those close to us, reinforce our focus on God (reading the Word and through worship), reflect on previous victories, run towards our problems and remember for whom we are fighting for, and finally who we are in Christ and the strength and power that yields. We again can accomplish this through worship, praying, being still, slowing down and studying the Word.
So everyday as believers we must put on the Belt of Truth, overcome evil with good, live at peace with others, love our enemies, put on the Shoes of Peace, have a peace beyond any understanding and a way or a countenance of living joyfully and worry-free in spite of the troubles of this world.
Again, pray, be in fellowship with other believers, worry as little as possible, thank God for all things and keep our thoughts on the right, good things because the past is closed and the future is still under construction.
Finally, move forward with the Shield of Faith (trust with the God factor), which strengthens our purpose and resolve with the Helmet of Salvation (as we march forward into eternity) turning to God for wisdom humbly, because we will be tempted daily or fiery darts will be shot at us.
This book has been a major encouragement to me especially since the trial of this case over the last 5 years, culminating in the sentencing and the eventual self surrender and the realities of the life of incarceration at this camp. I’m sorry for my actions that have ultimately got this entire case to this point. I am thankful for God’s provision and guiding and comforting through it all, especially family and for myself. And finally I pray that I learn the lessons I need to learn, with His wisdom and eventually get back to my family soon.
