Report:
The book “A Defense of Honor” is based in the early 1800s and follows the London society of finding husbands through annual seasons of balls and outings. The main character, Kit, was excommunicated from the society more than 10 years prior. Now, she helps unwed pregnant women by giving them a place to stay while pregnant and then raising their children once they give birth. This allows the women to reenter society and possibly live a full life still without the shame of scandal under their names.

I chose to read this book because I love reading about times and places that are different from my own. Often I throw myself a pity party because I currently don’t have something I’m accustomed to having. But, when I read about others’ experiences, I realize I should not be upset at all because others have never had certain amenities. After reading this book, I learned that you should always fight for what you believe, even if it’s hard or unacceptable by community standards. I learned that it’s beneficial to lean on people when you need help. Often good people find their way to you when you need them. Finally, I learned it’s important to have faith that things will turn out okay and you don’t have to control every situation in order for that to be the case.

All these lessons will be beneficial to remember upon release and will help me as I transition to the free world.
