OPEN, An Autobiography by Andre Agassi
#1
I chose to read “Open” by Andre Agassi because I’ve been a lifelong tennis fan and have admired watching Agassi’s entire career unfold for the last 40 years. This book was also recommended by a friend and was touted as one of best sports autobiographies of all time.

I’ve learned many life lessons by reading “Open” including to dare to live the one life you have on your terms. The irony is even though Andre Agassi hated tennis his entire life, he became a rebel wearing stone faced jean shorts, an earring and a rebellious haircut in his early years despite having a very stern father and a demanding childhood. What I admire most about Agassi’s life is that he did life on his terms. He became what others saw as a rebel and was paid handsomely on and off the court for it, winning 8 Grand Slams and earning an endorsement from Cannon for their Rebel camera.
Another life lesson I’ve learned by reading the book is to give back in some way either to your community or a worthwhile charity. Even though Agassi had a 9th grade education, he created a $40 million dollar educational preparatory academy under his name in the heart of Las Vegas. Today the school is a 26,000 square foot complex with 500 students and a waiting list of 800.

One of the biggest takeaways I’ve learned by reading “Open” that will help contribute to my success upon my release is to circle myself with a team of people (that Agassi did very early on) who are smart, intelligent experts in their field who will most importantly keep me on the righteous path.
I believe in having a spiritual leader, business tax accountant and an attorney along with a good friend who will always be willing to tell me the truth or voluntarily step in when they think something is wrong.
