GRIT by Angela Duckworth
1. I chose to read “GRIT” because it was recommended by a few others who have been incarcerated. I was curious to know what the author meant by GRIT and how that could help me achieve more in life.
2. One of the most valuable lessons I have learned by reading “GRIT” is that first, acquiring grit can be learned at an early age and fostered to adulthood helping adults achieve more in all aspects of their life including personal relationships, family life, and business goals. Basically, Grit is about working on something you care about so much you are willing to stay loyal to it. I learned the two components to GRIT are passion and perseverance. Passion begins first having a sincere INTEREST in something which you intrinsically enjoy what you do. Next comes the capacity to PRACTICE – the daily discipline of trying to do things better than we did yesterday. And the third component is PURPOSE. Purpose is what drives your passion which is the conviction that your work matters, meaning it is personally interesting and integrally connected to the well-being of others. Lastly, one must have HOPE at every stage from the beginning to the very end knowing we must learn to keep going even when things are difficult.
3. Upon my release, I believe having read “GRIT” will help me get back on track living a life with purpose fulfilling my dreams and goals. Personally, having resulted in a score of 4.5 out of 5.0 after taking the Grit Scale Test (which measures Grit), I feel confident I possess the qualities that will help me be successful at my new vocation as a wedding video editor.
