Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen
510 pages
- I chose to read “Born to Run” because I have been a fan of Bruce Springsteen for 43 years and originally purchased a copy of the book back in 2016 at a book signing and had a photo taken with the author Bruce Springsteen along with my daughter and sister. The irony is I never did prioritize reading the book back then but found the book in the Otisville library a little over a week ago and knew it was the perfect time.
- I learned a lot about Bruce Springsteen by reading this book that I never knew before. I loved the fact that I could tell, as a fan, that this book genuinely was written by Bruce without a ghost writer or credit to another writer. As a fan who knows the lyrics to his songs, you can see the same authentic “Bruceisms” in this book. I learned that Bruce sincerely suffers from a level of depression which is what his Father also had but seems to manage it with the help of his doctors, wife and family. The fact that Bruce was extremely transparent by telling his readers this about himself says a lot. Bruce also admitted to not having the best voice, but learned to work very hard at being able to expand his range which allowed him to perform for 3+ hours each concert. I also learned that Bruce was at his bandmate Clarence Clemmon’s bedside when Clarence was near death. Bruce also shared a very intimate moment with his Father. On the eve of Bruce becoming a Father, Bruce’s Dad drove a long distance at a late hour to tell Bruce “Bruce, you’ve been very good to us….and I know I haven’t been very good to you.” – this was Bruce’s Father’s way to let him know how sorry he was and that he didn’t want Bruce to make the same mistake with his children.
- I learned by reading “Born to Run” that having signed contracts between employees is paramount. I’ve been lazy about having signed contracts in place, but reading this book will help contribute to my success upon release. I also believe being happy with what I decide to do upon my release is very important to my overall success. Recently, I have decided to begin a wedding video production business as my main focus after halfway designation. I used to do more on the marketing side of things, but I’ve always enjoyed anything video related and I used to own a wedding video production business so I understand the niche. I also sincerely love video editing and this specialty avails me the opportunity to generate income from photographers, video companies, dj’s, and content producers just to name a few. The key for me after reading “Born to Run” is to be happy with what I do, but to secure signed contracts with all parties I do business with.
Lastly, I learned from Bruce the need for everyone to share their story. In his last 3 words Bruce wrote “Go tell it”. He was saying he hoped he had told his story well to all of his fans, and in doing so maybe he passed on to us the desire to “Go tell” our story to others. I feel a sense of accomplishment already as I do feel I am sharing my story by writing Journals and Book Reports.
