My first month in prison (May 17h thru June 17, 2023) was extremely difficult. If it weren’t for a couple of books that I read I would have been marred down in complete depression and more isolation than I was. The first book I started to read was entitled “Letters to an Incarcerated Brother” by Hill Harper. Mr. Harper is an accomplished actor (stars in CSI: NY), author, and activist. One of his books was on the New York Times best-seller list. This poignant work provided me a powerful message to take responsibility for my own actions and take the necessary steps to REALLY change my life. In this book, he also points very critically to the harsh injustices, disparities, and realities, that “justice-impacted” people are often faced with. He has become a strong advocate for change in our criminal justice and prison dysfunctional prison system. His “letter” to one incarcerated brother sends a “tough” love message to the inmate to stand up and take responsibility for his life if he really wants to change it.
