Book Title: Atomic Habits
Author: James Clear
Date Read: November 7th 2024
Atomic Habits appealed to me because it claims to show “an easy and proven way to build good habits and break bad ones.” Building good daily habits would help me become more efficient and thus complete future goals. There are also bad habits, such as procrastinating, that I would certainly love to eliminate. I was confident I would learn something from this book that would make it a worthy read.
In the book Atomic Habits James Clear states there are 4 laws to creating good habits. The 1st Law make it obvious, 2nd Law make it attractive, 3rd Law make it easy and the 4th law make it satisfying. The first law could mean to write down your current habits to become more aware of them and to make cues of good habits visible. The 2nd law could mean to pair an action you want to do with one you need to do. The 3rd law could mean preparing your environment to make future actions easier. The 4th law means to use reinforcement and give yourself an immediate reward at the completion of your habit. To break bad habits you basically use an inversion to the four laws. For example 1st law make it invisible, 2nd law make it unattractive, 3rd law make it difficult, and the 4th law make it unsatisfying.
By applying what I have learned about building good habits and breaking bad ones it will contribute to my prospects for success. In prison it is very easy to fall into bad habits or an unproductive routine. Reading a book like Atomic Habits helps me to keep my mind focused on building positive habits that will help me when I return to society.
