The Seven Principals of Good Government by Gary Johnson.
The author was a former Republican who ran as a presidential candidate for the Libertarian party.
The book resonated with me as big Government with its countless laws and regulations is in many
ways the downfall of this country. Fiscal responsibility is something both major parties have strayed
from. One creates deficits from government programs the other thru tax cuts that put the US budget
in the red. I read this book as I have a personal belief in many of its principals such as:
1. Eliminating income taxes and replacing with a consumption based tax.
2. Phasing out the IRS.
3. Marriage Equality.
4. Limiting foreign aid to first world countries.
5. Ending the war on immigration.
6. Eliminating the death penalty.
7. Cut spending to match Tax revenue.
8. Closing Prison Camps and expanding Home confinement.
9. Freedom of personal choice on everything as long as it does not harm others.
Another reason why I read this book is I’m considering running for the Senate. That would be a pie in the sky pipe dream
in most states but I live in Vermont. It only takes 500 signatures to get on the ballot and 150,000 votes to
win. This is in comparison to other states that require millions of votes and million of dollars in addition to being
well connected. The last election there were 14 choices on the ballot and no one, including the two major parties
spent any significant time or money in the state. If Bernie Sanders, who could not get elected to a city council position
in New York City, can be elected as an independent Senator from Vermont, then anything is possible. Besides the fact the
people just elected a convicted felon as President of the United States. The times are changing and I bring a fresh
perspective. This book and the recent election have kindled my political ambitions.
