I wanted a straight look at our country’s problems from someone who had seen war and public service, so I picked up Carl Higbie’s book. He writes that the habits that keep a combat unit alive—discipline, accountability, and a clear goal—can also fix many issues at home. One part stays with me. He describes walking patrols in Iraq and compares them to walking a police beat back in the United States. Different places, same need. Leaders must act on facts they see in front of them, not on politics.

Takeaway: Real change only begins when someone accepts hard responsibility. Higbie’s call for personal accountability lines up with what I tell younger men in re-entry programs. If you want safer streets or a stable household, start with what you can control today. Show up on time, keep your word, and listen to what people truly need.
