Biography Entry: Shane Andrew Smith

As a person, I am a work in progress. That’s how I now describe myself. I have lived a blessed life, but I have made some mistakes. I grew up with divorced parents and an abusive, mostly absent, mentally ill father, but my mother was my saving grace. I was blessed to be able to go to good schools, I have two degrees and worked one half of my career for an international corporation and the last half building up a small business to a medium-sized business as the chief financial officer. It is those duties and responsibilities as the CFO that lead me to allow them to commit crimes. I tried to fix them and failed miserably, and now my family is suffering. I have worked two jobs here in prison, almost since the day I arrived and I program every chance I get. The BOP, and this facility, still do not offer much programming or as much as I believe Congress intended with the First Step Act, and I believe the BOP does not award proper programming days (FSA credits) as the law and CFR 523 state that they should. I am fighting to get my days via administrative remedy, but I know I will have to take it before the judge. I keep track of everything I do every day via a handwritten calendar and via my daily journal. I have four of the Prison Professors Journals/books that you sent me and I have completed and submitted my release plan based on the templates and ideas provided by Michael Santos. I appreciate, very much, the work and the efforts made by Mr. Santos and his staff in trying to get prison terms reduced based on the work done by the inmates.
