Biography Entry: Shane Andrew Smith

Today’s Challenge for my Bio:

I felt unprepared when I came to prison. It didn’t matter that I read the BOP handbook online, or that I talked with a family member and also an acquaintance who were both locked up before, I was not prepared for the mental and emotional toll that the first few months of being away from my family and uncertain about how the future looked took on me. I overcame this situation by establishing a routine each day that including positive activities that focused on benefitting my body, my mind, and my soul. Working out multiple times a day, reading as much legal material and learning the current sentencing laws and guidelines, and studying the Bible and praying throughout each day allowed me to not only pass the time away from my family more quickly, but it helped to create a foundation for preparing myself for life after prison. I didn’t dwell on my circumstances, I dove into whatever I could to make me a better person physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. I was lucky to have a supportive family. I also benefitted greatly from the 5 notebooks/journals sent to me by Prison Professors. I have completed 3 of them as journals and also completed the self-study Planning for Success after Prison. I have accumulated tons of credits, have an approved release plan on file, and continue to ready myself for my release so that I can get back to taking care of my family and rebuilding my life!
