Biography Entry: Kayla Parish

Hi there! My name is Kayla, I’m 36 years old and I’m currently incarcerated in federal prison. Most of my life I’ve lived within the law. In my 30’s I was introduced to drugs and my life eventually flipped upside down. Now that I’m incarcerated, I see how poor my life choices became and I’m determined to change my life. I’m currently clean and sober and plan to remain so when released. I want to have the chance to be there for my family and help them out. I know I need to live the right way in order to do that.

I grew up in a big family. I have four brothers and both my parents were involved in my life. My mother passed away about six years ago, but I still have the rest of my family in my life. Fortunately, most of them have remained supportive of me throughout my incarceration. Currently my biggest support comes from my aunt Lisa and my grandmother. Although they both have their own issues, they are here for me as much as they can be and that means the world to me.

I currently work in the library and love it because I’ve truly found solace in reading. In my free time, I mostly read, however I also paint nails, give massages and do some exercise outside. I mainly enjoy reading non-fiction, with the occasional fantasy and romance book for entertainment.

Since being locked up, I have learned how to tailor clothing, cook with only hot water and am currently learning Spanish. I’m constantly working on strengthening my mindset, becoming more positive and growing spiritually.

I hope that by the time I’m eligible for release I will be completely ready to hit the ground running and live right and live well.
