My name is John Dalaly and I am writing this first biography to begin memorializing the way that I will navigate the personal crisis of a 28-month prison term. I intend to update this biography quarterly, and to provide daily documentation that shows how I am using my time to work toward the service of others. I encourage others to follow along with my journey. They will learn how faith, and a commitment to hard work and redemption guides my decisions going forward:
Early Life and Family Background:
I came into this world on May 14, 1972, in the bustling city of Baghdad, Iraq. My parents, Dawood and Mariam Dalaly, were the pillars of our family. They provided for our household of seven children, and I was the youngest among them. My siblings and I grew up as Iraqi Chaldeans, a minority group in a predominantly different religious landscape. We faced prejudice at times, but my father’s unwavering commitment as an entrepreneur and provider for our family left an indelible mark on me.
In Iraq, my father owned restaurants and a small hotel. He worked hard to create a life for us, instilling in me not only the value of hard work but also the importance of faith. Our Chaldean heritage, a language Jesus once spoke, added a unique layer to our identity. Despite being a minority, we embraced our faith and culture.
When I was about 10 years old, our lives took a significant turn. My family decided to embark on a journey to the United States in search of better opportunities. My father’s dedication to our well-being extended to this endeavor, as he believed it would provide us with a brighter future.
Education:
My journey through the education system was not marked by academic achievements or honors. I didn’t adapt well to classroom learning, as I thrived on hands-on experiences and real-life challenges, which would later become instrumental in shaping my career.
Career and Entrepreneurship:
My entrepreneurial spirit began to blossom early on. In 1978, I took my first step into the business world with the establishment of the “Dalaly Pop Candy Company.” It was a humble start, but it set the stage for a lifetime of entrepreneurship.
In the early ’80s, I initiated a mobile medical program catering to women, infants, and children. This program would go on to achieve national and international recognition. Along the way, I was honored to receive the Entrepreneur of the Year award twice in the 1990s, a testament to the dedication and hard work that I poured into my ventures.
But my contributions extended far beyond business success. I provided medical services in multiple countries, and I became one of the largest manufacturers of mobile medical units that we exported to Arabic countries. In the US, we built businesses that set up COVID clinics and we established staffing agencies. I am proud to have built many ventures that contributed to tens of millions of dollars in tax payments to the United States, but mostly, I’m proud of my wife, my daughters, and my eight grandchildren.
Personal Life:
My personal life has been shaped by strong family bonds and a loving marriage. For 45 years, I have shared my life with my beloved wife, Vivian. Together, we raised three remarkable daughters: Dina, Janan, and Katrina. As the years passed, our family grew with the addition of eight beautiful grandchildren. The close-knit nature of our family has always been a source of joy and strength.
I strive to live as a good role model for my family, but also for our community. I serve as a Eucharistic minister in hospitals and churches. My commitment to making a difference in the lives of others is unwavering.
Significant Life Events:
At the age of 71, I find myself facing a significant chapter in my life as I prepare to serve a 28-month prison term. This challenging period was triggered by a regrettable decision that led to my conviction for bribing a public official. However, I am determined to use this time wisely and constructively.
I am creating a roadmap that includes daily journaling to track my progress and a commitment to lifelong learning, including writing reports on the books I read. This effort is not just about personal growth but also about showing my dedication to reconciliation and success.
Personal Values and Beliefs:
My faith as a Chaldean Catholic has always been at the heart of my life. I attend Mass every Sunday, and my daily routine includes praying the rosary. My unwavering faith has provided me with strength and guidance throughout my journey.
Future Aspirations:
Through my journals and my commitment to learning, I aspire to make a positive contribution to society during my time in prison. My legacy is one of faith, hard work, and redemption, and I hope it serves as an inspiration to my family and community. Even in the face of adversity, I believe in the power of redemption through dedication and a commitment to making a difference in the world, regardless of the circumstances.
I commit my life to Christ, and to living his will.
