Arrested in 2000, Brian Zater has been in federal prison for 24 years for bank robbery and related ancillary charges. Initially, he’d been sentenced to 49.5 years. From day one of his incarceration he committed to personal development and community-contribution work. This work has included mail-based correspondence courses, starting and facilitating numerous programs in the Bureau of Prisons, youth outreach, publishing a self-help book–The Tree of Life, Sowing Your Seeds of Destiny–and, with a variety of publications, publishing memoir and inspirational essays. His work evolved to include life coaching, and, following their return to society, not one of his one-on-one students has recidivated for any reason. Brian studied the law since his arrest, ultimately becoming the most sought-after legal consultant and writ writer at each facility in which he’s resided. He started out in and served just over nine years across four different high-security facilities. He earned an early transfer to the Medium security level, where he served at one facility for over 10 years. After saving someone’s life, he earned an early transfer to FCI Miami Low, where he’s been for just over 4 years. At the end of his first year in Miami, he filed for and received a 15-year reduction from his federal term. In its ruling the court provided a rare commendation, stating that Brian had the best rehabilitation record the judge had seen in nearly 30 years as a judge. He still teaches, writes, and helps others navigate prison and their post-conviction appeals.
