Why I chose to read this book: Although this is mostly what we refer to as a ‘coffee table book’, a book with pretty pictures and not much writing, it does serve as a thorough compendium of unique, small hotels. As someone who has design over 50 hotels, mostly larger urban buildings, I thought this book would show me possibilities at the other end of the size scale.
What I learned from this book: Hotels are about 2 key things; destination and hospitality (service). This book does an excellent job of showing hotels from 1 room to 20 in destinations from London to Bhutan. What all these hotels have in common is a celebration of design that showcases their destination (views, local styles, etc.), and sumptious furnishings amenities, and service. It shows that any scale of hotel can work if the key factors are handled with style. attention to detail, and a creative take on their surroundings.
How this books will contribute to my success upon release: As I plan to move more from architect to developer, I am always on the look out for sites that could suitably host an interesting hotel concept. As an Example, there is an old Duke family mansion in Durham, North Carolina, not to far from my home that has sat empty for the past decade I am told. It would be a perfect location for a project such as the ones in this book. The right combination of concept and operator could give new life to this beautiful old building, and might be a possible stepping stone for me as I seek to rebound after my incarceration.
