One Good Dog
Written by Susan Wilson in 2010
The library here has a few books you can read that earn you a certificate if you take a test after reading it. That is why I have picked the novel. I would not have otherwise. Not with descriptions like the one from USA TODAY “”A love story between a man and a dog… You’ll cry at the end.””, even though it is on there Bestseller list. I didn’t cry at the end but towards the beginning in a flashback when the man lost his family and is sent to foster care as a child.
It is a story of redemption told from 2 points of view, the man (Adam March), and the dog (Chance). Growing up as an orphan Adam dedicated his life to success in the business world. It all falls apart when he has an “”episode”” and slaps his secretary. He loses everything, wife divorced him and his daughter, who he neglected for years because of work, wants nothing to do with him. He is sentenced to community service serving food to the homeless in a soup kitchen. Along the way he meets up with the dog Chance. Chance is a pit bull who was raised for dog fighting. Chance escapes that world and is enjoying his new found freedom when he is eventually captured by dog catchers and sent to the pound. Adam wants nothing to do with Chance but circumstances put them together. After a lot of drama, everyone is happy in the end.
It is a very well written story but I found it to be overly descriptive at times. It has all the parts of a good story: love, comedy, drama, suspense and action. At 300 pages, I finished it in 3 days it kept my attention. The funniest part of the whole book is that there is a review from Bark magazine. I found that hilarious for some reason.”
