Building the Right Support While Learning Tucson Federal Prison Camp

One of the first things I noticed at the Tucson Camp is how important it is to be thoughtful about who you spend time with.

Before surrendering, I told my family I would stay focused here. That means choosing wisely when it comes to daily conversations and friendships. I am watching and learning first.

The people who seem to do well here stay busy. They work. They take classes. They avoid those who waste time or create problems. That is the group I aim to align with. It matches what I wrote in my release plan—to contribute to this place in a positive way, not just pass time.

I also committed to keeping a job and earning every possible day off my sentence through Good Conduct Time and First Step Act credits. That requires discipline. My Unit Team will see if I followed through when they review my release plan updates.

At home, my wife and kids expect the same. I promised them that while I am here, I will document my work, update them on progress, and return home having done what I said I would do.

If you are preparing to surrender, remember that the people around you will shape what you do inside. Choose well. And make sure your actions match the words you gave your family.

One question I wrote today: Are the people I am spending time with helping me follow through on my release plan and my promises to my family?
