Journal Entry

“Life will only give you what you fight for”

  • Exhausted from yesterday’s graduation ceremony.
  • 7:30am-2pm: My first day in my Veterinary Assisting class! Like the Nutrition certification course I recently completed, it’s an ICEV laptop class offered by ATLO that must be taken in our Education building. There will be a final exam with no notes. There are 4 Vet Assisting classes, so I’m hoping I’ll be allowed to take the other three once I complete this one. I took pages and pages of notes and there is so much information it’s almost overwhelming.

At the beginning of the first slideshow I stopped and thought deeply for a few minutes. Was this what I really wanted in a career? I made a mental pros/cons list:

– It’s not conservation or research.
+ I’d be contributing to conservation in another way.
+ I’d be an asset to society, as I’d be keeping my community safe (in Wildlife Veterinary practice).
+ It’s hands-on.
+ I’d work with a large variety of animals again.
– I’ll experience heartbreaking situations.
+ It’s rewarding work and I’ve dealt with euthanasia and sadness at work before.
After a few moments, I made my decision with a “yep! Let’s do this!” attitude. I left class mentally drained, but feeling excited and on fire about the future.
-Received a lovely email from my Christian pen pal.
-I wrote my proposal for a community outreach activity/program to be sent to our Colonel. I’m including it below:

PROPOSAL: COMMUNITY OUTREACH CARDS
PURPOSE:

TO POSITIVELY BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN JUSTICE-IMPACTED WOMEN OF LOWELL ANNEX C.I. AND SOCIETY, WHICH WILL PROVIDE US WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO POSITIVELY INFLUENCE OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY, DEMONSTRATE THAT WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN SOCIETY, AND IN TURN, PAINT A MORE ACCURATE PORTRAIT OF THE INCARCERATED, FOR SOCIETY.

I LED THIS ACTIVITY AS A PEER FACILITATOR IN HORIZON’S FAITH AND CHARACTER PROGRAM LAST YEAR AFTER CONTEMPLATING WAYS I COULD IMPROVE MY COMMUNITY AND INSPIRE MY PEERS AND STUDENTS TO DO THE SAME. AS A RESULT, WILDLIFE OCALA RESCUE WAS DEEPLY MOVED BY OUR GRATITUDE FOR WHAT THEY DO AND I BELIEVE WE MADE AN IMPACT IN OUR COMMUNITY. YOU MAY VIEW THE CARDS WE MADE ON THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE FOR APRIL 22ND, 2024 (EARTH DAY). I AM REQUESTING TO BRING MY IDEA TO THE WOMEN IN THE INCENTIVE PROGRAM.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

50-100 COLORED CONSTRUCTION PAPER
COLORING UTENSILS OF ANY KIND

I, KASSANDRA MOORE #F41451, AS THIS PROGRAM’S LEADER, WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR CHECKING-OUT, OVERSEEING THE USE, AND FOR THE RETURN OF THE COLORING UTENSILS TO THE STAFF/LOCATION BORROWED FROM. I WILL HAVE AN INVENTORY LIST TO ENSURE ALL SUPPLIES ARE ACCOUNTED FOR AT THE END OF THE ACTIVITY.

LOCATION: INCENTIVE PROGRAM LOUNGE
DATE/TIME: ANY DAY MON-FRI DURING 3RD YARD.
COMPLETION:
AFTER CARDS ARE MADE, I WOULD DELIVER THE COLORING UTENSILS, UNUSED PAPER, AND FINISHED CARDS TO THE APPROPRIATE STAFF/LOCATION OF YOUR CHOICE. THE COMPLETED CARDS COULD THEN BE DELIVERED BY DOC STAFF TO THEIR DESIGNATED LOCATION.
LOCATION OPTIONS:
HOSPITALS, FIRE STATIONS, NURSING HOMES, WILDLIFE REHAB, POLICE STATIONS, HOMELESS SHELTERS
RULES:
THE HANDMADE CARDS WILL HAVE *NO* NAMES, DC #S, OR ANY INDICATION OF WHO MADE THEM. THEY ARE TO BE ANONYMOUS FROM LOWELL ANNEX C.I. INCENTIVE PROGRAM ONLY. CARDS CONTAIN GENERIC AFFIRMATIONS, WORDS OF GRATITUDE, AND/OR THOUGHTFUL DECORATION.
CONCLUSION:
PLEASE MEET WITH ME TO DISCUSS FURTHER QUESTIONS/CONCERNS AND APPROVAL

SINCERELY,
Kassandra Moore #F41451
