The change I want to see in the prison system is parole. I believe that mandatory minimums are unfair and unjust and cause more harm than good. It’s a proven fact that the longer a person stays in the system the higher the chance of recidivism is. I believe that a person should be evaluated each year to determine what progress is being made and judge that person by what they are doing now to change instead of the crime they committed in the past. I do not believe crime is a one-size-fits-all all. If parole isn’t brought back I would like to see all first-time offenders receive FSA. I am a first-time MIN offender and don’t qualify because of a 924c charge. Everyone is capable of change as long as they want it and work towards becoming a better person. Sometimes a second chance is all a person needs.
