When I first came to prison I was truly afraid of my future. I didn’t know what to do with all the time that I was sentenced. It was maybe a few months into my prison term when I received “Earning Freedom” by Michael Santos. As I was reading the book and realized that I too could change my story.
Like Michael Santos, I knew with the right attitude I could change the course of my life. I started defining success and what that meant to me. I thought about the importance of an education. So, the first thing I did was enroll in a prison program through Adams State University. After finishing the first two courses it gave me a sense of accountability, which enhanced my motivation tenfold. I continue to take classes on a path towards an A.A. degree.
I’ve come to a decision that I will not let my circumstances define me. My journey has just begun, but I will continue to look forward with a brighter outlook on things.
